Designed for sustainable comfort

Roughly 68–70% of total energy consumption is supplied by renewable sources. Approximately 50% of the lodge’s electricity demand (including EV charging) is met by our on-site solar-photovoltaic system (incl. battery storage) shared with the main house; the remaining electricity is drawn from the public grid. In the Azores islands, about 36–40% of grid-supplied electricity comes from renewable sources.

The building itself is constructed from sustainably sourced wood and is designed to minimize environmental impact while maintaining thermal and acoustic comfort. Misterios Lodge is intended to coexist quietly with the surrounding forest and volcanic landscape.

Sustainability in the Azores

The Azores archipelago has been internationally recognised as the world’s first sustainable tourism destination archipelago under the EarthCheck Sustainable Destination programme. This regional designation reflects a commitment across the islands to preserve natural and cultural heritage and support responsible tourism development. Learn more about the Azores’ sustainability context from the official regional tourism authority.

Stay connected, even at the edge of the Atlantic

The lodge is connected via a fiber-based local internet connection, with an independent Starlink link available as backup. This dual-path setup supports stable video calls, cloud access, and large file transfers, and has been used reliably for remote work, research stays, and longer visits.

Backup power for connectivity

The networking equipment is supported by an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), allowing internet connectivity to remain available during short power grid interruptions.
