Research Stay
A quiet base for focused work, observation, and analysis
A private lodge designed for researchers who need calm, reliability, and time to think—whether working with data, preparing fieldwork, or analyzing results.
Set within a volcanic island environment shaped by Atlantic weather and natural variability.
Overview
This stay supports independent research work carried out at a measured pace. The setting allows guests to focus for extended periods, balance desk-based work with time outdoors, and adapt plans to conditions as needed.
It is suited to self-directed researchers rather than organized programs or hosted research activities.

The lodge’s south-central position allows shorter driving distances and easier access to different parts of the island.
Pico Island has its own airport (PIX) with daily inter-island flights. There are also direct flights to mainland Portugal (Lisbon – LIS), with frequency varying seasonally. In addition, Faial Island is reachable by ferry in approximately 30 minutes and offers more frequent direct flights to the mainland, which many travelers use as an alternative arrival or departure route.
In addition to Faial, Pico is also connected by ferry to São Jorge Island, with regular crossings throughout the year. Services are less frequent than to Faial and are subject to weather conditions.
As with all island travel, weather conditions can occasionally affect flights and ferry schedules. If you need to be somewhere at a fixed date after your stay, it is advisable to allow an extra day or two of flexibility.
The lodge is located within a shared property that also includes the main house, where we live. While there is no direct visual connection and the lodge is screened by trees, the driveway is shared and passes nearby. We keep to ourselves and maintain a quiet environment, while being available for practical assistance if needed.
